Making 2016 a New Year and New You
With the New Year approaching, I can’t help but think back over conversations that we’ve had with clients during the past year. It’s a logical time to make resolutions and if you’ve have it in mind to change some personal situations for the better, here are a few to consider that will set you and your family up for a happier and more peaceful year ahead:
- Review your critical documents. Time goes by and life happens when we aren’t looking. Are your critical documents up to date? Have relationships changed along the way? Pull out your health care proxies, wills, insurance policies and other important documents. Make sure you are still comfortable with choices you’ve made and if not, update the documents so that you being the year with up to date, relevant documents that will fulfill your desires as they stand today, not 10 years ago. If you haven’t ever created these documents – this is a great first resolution!
- Let your kids be kids. Have you recently divorced? Are you in the midst of a custody dispute? If so, take the high road. Keep the kids out of it and give them the gift of being a kid. All too often children grow up too fast because parents put their kids in the middle of adult discussions. There are more effective resources available to help analyze relationships, discuss personal situations and otherwise – these conversations can be damaging to children and their own relationships with the adults involved.
- Get Healthy – it’s a priority! Were you involved in an accident recently? If you are dealing with the effects of an injury caused by an accident and haven’t sought out medical care for fear of the bills, you may be doing yourself a disservice. Consult with a personal injury lawyer to discuss the specifics of your situation. You may be eligible for medical care reimbursement from injuries sustained in the accident.
- Expand your Family. Been thinking about adoption? There are thousands of children in Rhode Island currently in foster care. Do you have the desire to become a parent? Perhaps this is the year to explore how adoption can enrich your life. Our firm specializes in adoption here in Rhode Island and can help make sense of the process for you.
Whether adopting these or resolutions of your own, remember that it takes time to change old behaviors and adopt the new. The best resolution that you can make is to decide what you want to change and take the first step!
My partners and I wish you the best of luck in finding happiness and good fortune in 2016 and beyond!
